Coffee Tortoni Recipe

In need of a new desert! Lets get our hands and mouth dirty with a good ole’ southern Coffee Tortoni. Coffee is good for you, comes with a lot of health benefits, so why not turn those benefits into something sweet!

In case you haven’t heard of coffee tortoni, it’s an old southern desert from the Civil War ear. Very similar to Tiramisu yet more flavorful and delight! To enjoy, all one need is a cup of coffee or tea to go along with your coffee tortoni. Its so good, you’ll wonder why its one of the southern best kept secret desert, well not any longer since I’m spilling the family recipe! Coffee anyone?


  • 2 tablespoons grated coconut

  • 2 tablespoons chopped almonds

  • 1 egg white

  • 1 heaping teaspoon instant coffee

  • 1/2 cup plus 2 teaspoons sugar

  • 1 cup heavy cream

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/8 teaspoon almond extract


  1. Toast coconut and chopped almonds.

  2. whip egg white with coffee, gradually add 2 teaspoons sugar.

  3. Whip cream; add remaining 1/2 cup sugar, vanilla and almond extract.

  4. Fold cream into egg mixture; add coconut and almonds.

  5. Pour into fluted paper baking cups.

  6. Sprinkle with additional coconut if desired.

  7. Freeze 2 hours or more.
